Applying for music copyright- Miss Georgiou

The copyright law is a protection for an artist/music creator within the industry and protects literary, dramatic artistic or musical work such as a song recording, musical works and films. This law highlights that a company or performer has complete possession and control of their product such as a song. Copyright prevents the product from being used or copied without permission and because of this law, the owner is able to protect their music and discover if it is being used in a negative way.

Before I make a music video for our chosen Lana Del Rey 'Blue Jeans' remix I need to contact two companies. This is because we needed to show that the song was not being exploited and I am not using it in a negative way and it is going against the copyright law if use this without their consent. The group overall needed to be provided with permission because we could not continue and use the song without given consent as that would mean going against the copyright law. I found the email for Polydor, Lana Del Rey's UK record label on their website to send them a professional email asking for permission to use the song. Then, as I am using a remix, I would need to find the creator of the remix and contact them. To do this, I found their website in their youtube channel 'Huge Releases' and emailed them asking permission to use their RAC remix of the song.

Our group has re-sent an email to our record label and we haven't gained a response, however we are going to continue with our filming and planning with our chosen song.

  1. This post demonstrates some understanding of why it is essential to apply for music copyright before you start creating your music video. Aim to explore the role of copyright further.

Include your response from your record label, once you have received it.
